The ubiquitous “Black 5”
The role model
With eight hundred and forty-two of the locomotives built in this class, the Black 5 was probably the most widely used steam locomotive ever used on British railways. They were designed by Sir William Stanier shortly after he was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer. Some functions were taken over by older GWR locomotives.
The Black 5, known as multipurpose locomotives, pulled both passenger and freight trains. With 6-foot drive wheels and 25,445 pound traction, the Black 5 proved to be a high-performance locomotive that can be used anywhere. The BR later developed the standard 5MT locomotive from it.
The locomotives were always painted black during use. In the LMS period, thin yellow lines were used. A red / white / gray line became standard in the BR deployment period. Depending on the time, the various BR coats of arms were also attached.
The model
The model offers a good combination of fine details and good mechanical execution. This combination of appearance and performance combined with a good price-performance ratio and after-sales service characterize our models. Each model is supplied with a silver-brazed copper kettle, CE-marked and hydraulically tested for double working pressure. We offer a 12 month guarantee on every model.
We are currently planning a first lot of 25 models. The Black 5, as a well-known and popular locomotive, is expected to be very popular. The number of production pieces may possibly increase somewhat. However, it is not yet certain, but depends on the capacities of our supplier.
Early orders have the option of choosing the paint job and locomotive number of your locomotive. We do not accept orders for more than 5 models with identical paintwork and number, so that each locomotive only exists in small numbers.
