In 1935 the LNER decided to introduce a new streamlined train to run London to Edinburgh. The locomotive designed by Nigel Gresley was a further development of the A3 Pacific class, but with increased boiler pressure and slightly reduced cylinder size. Together with the A3, the A4 was a three-cylinder design.
As is well known, "Mallard" reached No. 4468 on July 3, 1938, a world record speed for steam traction of 126 miles per hour. A record that still stands today. But the A4 locomotives were also workhorses. During World War II, the A4 were often seen hauling 700-ton trains. At this point, the side valances were removed to simplify maintenance. 35 of this class were built between 1935 and 1938.
The first four locomotives were given a two-tone gray paint job for the "Silver Jubilee" train. The machines received LNER apple green, blue, black and finally green paintwork. The last locomotive in this series was retired in 1966.
Limited series
The LNER A4 will be the subject of a single batch production, the completion of which is planned for May / June 2021. Once the batch is sold, this model will no longer be shipped for a few years.
This is a complex model and we currently have enough factory capacity booked to produce just 50 models. Please note that over 40% of the batch is already reserved.
The track 2 machine is available in a range of paint schemes with or without side skirts. Early orders can choose between a name and a number.
The model is available at a price of € 7,195 + shipping and packaging.
