The class 61XX locomotives, like many others, were further developed from earlier designs. The Collett class 61XX owes its beginnings to the number 99 locomotive designed by Churchward in 1903. The class 61XX was almost identical to the earlier class 51XX and the later class 81XX. However, they had a higher boiler pressure, which led to a greater pulling force. The 61XX locomotives spent their working lives on Paddington's suburban railways. They had to pull heavy trains at quite high speeds and, thanks to the increased boiler pressure, were able to cope with traffic demands.
At GWR times they wore the green paint as standard. BR provided the series with both a black and a green paint.
