The LNER A3

The A3s were a development of the earlier A1 class under the direction of Sir Nigel Gresley. He designed the new Pacific locomotives to haul 600-ton trains. 51 of the locomotives originally designated as A1 were converted to the new A3 classification with increased boiler pressure and new cylinders.

27 new locomotives were built to the A3 standard. Thus, a total of 78 class A3 locomotives were in use. By 1960 all locomotives were given twin smokestacks, and then most were fitted with German-style smoke deflectors after drivers complained about poor visibility. 4472 was the first steam locomotive to officially reach a speed of 100 mph.

The A3 locomotives were in service on most parts of the LNER system. The last locomotive, 60052, was retired in 1966. Before the war, the A3s were livery in green LNER livery, but wore matte black from 1939 to 1945. After the war they were repainted LNER green. Most locomotives then wore BR blue livery before they were all repainted BR "brunswick green" with orange and black livery. Depending on the era, they wore early or later lion coats of arms.

The model...

This coal-fired model has three cylinders and Walschaerts controls. The copper boiler is silver brazed and hydraulically tested to double working pressure, CE and UKCA marked. The case is made of etched sheet brass. The development of this model was overseen by our award-winning professional engineer, Mike Pavie, and the series is built by the same manufacturer that supplied our much acclaimed Coronation Class locomotive.

The Class A3 model is supplied fully built and operational, painted and trimmed in either LNER Green or BR Green. We will supply you with a type plate of your choice. As a testament to our confidence in the quality of this model, each locomotive comes with a full 24 month guarantee. All models are inspected and boiler tested before delivery. Our customer service is considered second to none by our customers.

We have reserved capacity at the factory to manufacture just 25 models. We may be able to increase this number a little more, but we cannot guarantee that additional models will be available. Once the batch is complete, it is unlikely that we will commission another production of the A3 Class for a few years, if at all. The model is expected to be completed in April 2023.
