These locomotives were designed for the British government during World War II. The first of the 377 machines built was introduced in January 1943. The production of this type lasted until 1962, mainly for private users like the National Coal Board (NCB).
The locomotives were distributed across the entire LNER network. Its 0-6-0 wheel arrangement made it possible to drive in tight corners. This made the locomotives ideal for use in mines, factories and port facilities. Some of the locomotives went into BR service, but most were privately bought for industrial use. Many machines have been preserved to this day and come in a variety of particularly attractive paintwork.
